What is ADD? …What is ADHD?

ADD stands for Attention Deficit Disorder.  This disorder has some of the following characteristics.

  Difficulty following through on instructions
Difficulty keeping attention on tasks or play activities
Losing things necessary for tasks and activities at school and home
  Not listening
Failure to give close attention to details
  Disorganization
Poor concentration for any length of time
  Forgetfulness
  Easily distracted

ADHD stands for Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder.  This disorder has some of the following symptoms as seen in a child:

  Fidgeting
  Leaving seat without permission
  Running or climbing inappropriately
  Talking excessively
  Having difficulty in playing quietly
Who always seems to be on the go
  Having trouble waiting his turn
  Interrupting

Some children have characteristics of both ADD and ADHD.  This has been termed to be the “combined type” of disorder.  Some times these disorders also occur along with learning disabilities, depression, anxiety, bed-wetting, developmental delays and other difficulties.  Some children “out-grow” these behaviors and others will have them into adulthood.

There are many different types of interventions that can be used to assist children with these disorders at home and in the classroom.  Consultation with a mental health professional may be helpful also.
