Nurturing Parenting Program Facilitator Training Child Guidance Center is pleased to be selected as a training site for the Nurturing Parenting Program Facilitator Training with Dr. Stephen Bavolek. The philosophy of Nurturing Parenting emphasizes the importance of raising children in a warm, trusting and caring household. These principles are also an integral part of the behavioral health treatment provided by Child Guidance Center to assist with the recovery and resiliency of both the child and the family.  In memory of Dr. Bernadette Simpson, former Medical Director for Child Guidance Center (CGC), who served as our distinguished child/adolescent psychiatrist from October 2000 to October 2005. Under Dr. Simpson’s leadership, Child Guidance Center, Inc. obtained national re-accreditation, implemented numerous programs and was widely recognized for the quality medical services provided to the community. Dr. Simpson’s effort to improve the quality of life for children, adolescents and their families at Child Guidance Center was exemplary. Prior to joining CGC, Dr. Simpson was a staff physician at Pawnee Mental Health Services in Manhattan, Kansas. She was a Lt. Commander in the U.S. Navy and served as a Naval Nurse in the Vietnam Era. Dr. Simpson also worked for the U.S. Public Health Service, National Health Service Corps, as the Medical Director for a walk-in primary care clinic. Dr. Simpson received her medical degree from New York Medical College and completed her internship in Internal Medicine at Duke University Medical School, Durham, North Carolina. She completed her Residency in Adult, Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at the University of Florida in Gainesville where she served as Chief Resident. Dr. Simpson authored several publications for the Florida Medical Society on the “Advances and Treatment of Anxiety and Depression Disorders”. Dr. Simpson was a member of the American Medical Association, the National Medical Association and the American Psychiatric Association. She volunteered as a member of the Board of Directors for the Alachua County Mental Health Association and numerous other organizations related to the medical field. Survivors include her daughter, Ruth Simpson; two sisters, Carol Canaday of Amityville, NY and Betty Watkins of Fayetteville, NC; and her brother, Bernard Simpson of Amityville, NY.
